A Parsec is a Measurement of Distance!

There is a funny error I found in Star Wars IV (A New Hope).

In The Cantina scene, Han Solo says,

“You haven’t heard of the Millennium Falcon? It’s the ship that made the Kessel Run in less than 12 parsecs!”.

Well, it turns out a parsec is a unit of DISTANCE (approximately 3.261 light years, a number found using parallax. Don’t ask. You can ask Google, but it’s really complicated and would take up an entire post to explain. Let’s wait to do that one later ; ).

I decided to look this whole parsec thing up to see if other people had caught it. I found this guy-

I’m glad I wasn’t the only one to realize that error! You would think that a genius like George Lucas would have researched it better before putting it into the movie!

Have you ever discovered a scientific error in a movie? Tell me about it!
